'Fashion Construction' is a module I took in my first semester at University. When I mention it people always ask me a lot of questions about what exactly this module entails, it's basically an introduction to clothing production and making your own garments.

We produced a step by step instruction and a sample of most common seams, zips and hems. We then moved onto how to construct pockets and collars. We learnt pattern cutting basics and how to add ruffles into a dress. We learnt how to move darts in a pattern or how to eliminate them completely. To end the module we designed, pattern cut and made a toile of a dress...

Below is a video of my technical file that I handed in to be graded with everything inside and pictures of what we did...

Overall, I found this module extremely useful because to me, this is one of the most important aspects of Fashion Design. Being able to sew and create garments yourself gives you the creative flexibility to be able to experiment and test ideas out without the expensive option of paying somebody to do it for you. Also, some of my greatest ideas come in the middle of when I am sewing when I think 'oh, I wonder what that would look like if I did this?' you won't get any of that without diving in and doing it yourself.
