I started writing about Ying Gao briefly on my last post 'Presentation Review' she is a designer who was featured on another classmates presentation. I was inspired by this presentation to research her further in my own time.
Ying Gao is a Montreal based designer who uses complex sensory technology in her dresses. The interactive clothes react to an onlookers gaze by moving and lighting up. The dresses are made from super organza (the worlds lightest fabric) and sewn with glow in the dark thread. She installed eye tracking technology into the dresses so that they activate when they detect someones gaze.

Ying Gao's shift dresses are sewn with photoluminescent thread and contain tiny eye tracking electronic devices. The dresses have ting motors sewn into them that can move parts of the dress and make it change shape. Sensory technology is used to transform the dresses from pale, etheral dresses into luminescent 'jelly fish' like garments.

She has more scientific dresses such as one with pins that reacts to sound. However, with no formal fashion design training is she a designer? is she a scientist? is she a technologist? I think she's a mixture of all three, even though she has no formal fashion design training she still collaborates it with the areas that she is familiar with to create these magnificent garments that really are one of a kind.
I would love to look at implementing other aspects into my fashion design projects. Could I create something that has a purpose other than to be worn? It will definitely be something I will look at in the near future whilst in my degree.
